About Helios Towers

We are a leading independent telecoms infrastructure company, with one of the most extensive tower portfolios across Africa and the Middle East. Our business model promotes tower infrastructure sharing and enables mobile network operators (MNOs) to deliver mobile connectivity more quickly, reliably, cost-effectively and with a lower carbon footprint. In turn, this supports the expansion and quality of mobile connectivity, driving sustainable development in our markets.

Role Overview

Reporting to the Director of Digital Innovation, you will have a pivotal role in leading the establishment and technical direction of our power systems design function. You will define Helios Towers’ power architecture roadmap, standardise design practices, and drive digital automation to enhance reliability, efficiency, and cost savings across our telecom infrastructure.

Role Responsibilities

As Principal Engineer – Power Systems, you will be responsible for:

  • Establishing the Power Systems Design function, including structure, governance, and processes.
  • Defining the roadmap for telecom power systems — grid-tied, off-grid, and hybrid.
  • Driving standardisation and modular “plug-and-play” design solutions to reduce total cost of ownership (TCO).
  • Developing and approving design documentation including single-line diagrams, load assessments, cable sizing, grounding, and site layouts.
  • Conducting and reviewing LV/MV studies including short-circuit, protection, harmonics, and PV integration.
  • Specifying and integrating DG sets, rectifiers, batteries, and solar PV systems into hybrid solutions.
  • Developing modular power “kits” and standardised technical specifications to streamline rollout.
  • Leading vendor evaluations, FAT/SAT, and ensuring high reliability, maintainability, and cost efficiency.
  • Setting and maintaining design review and quality control processes; providing technical support during commissioning.
  • Collaborating cross-functionally with Operations, PMO, Procurement, and Commercial teams to ensure design alignment with SLAs and business objectives.

Requirements for the Role

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 10+ years of experience in power systems design, with at least 5 years in a leadership or design-sign-off role.
  • Proven experience designing hybrid power systems (rectifiers, diesel generators, battery storage, solar PV).
  • Strong command of LV/MV systems, –48 V DC distribution, generator/ATS logic, grounding, lightning protection, and cable design.
  • Experience developing modular, “plug-and-play” power solutions and managing suppliers through FAT/SAT.
  • Proficiency in ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, AutoCAD Electrical, PVSyst, and HOMER Pro.
  • Skills in engineering automation and digital workflows, including DMS management, scripting (Python, APIs, SQL), and dashboarding (Power BI, Tableau).
  • Demonstrated success in building design standards, automation tools, and data-driven workflows.
  • Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence across teams.
  • Knowledge of BS/IEC standards and HSE compliance best practices.

Desired Skills

  • Stakeholder management and communication
  • Project management and delivery oversight
  • Reporting on technical and business KPIs
  • Business performance measurement and optimisation
  • Knowledge of French language (advantageous)
